| Hobby Master 1/72 scale HA9602: Dassault Rafale M #28 of Flotille 12, Aeronavale, carrier Charles de Gaulle, Libya Operation 2011. Production run of 700 models. Length 8.25 inches Wingspan 5.75 inches Because of the Libyan civil war a no-fly zone was established by several countries to help protect the Libyan civilians from air and ground attacks by the Gaddafi government. The French contribution to this action was called Harmattan (hot dry winds that blow over the Sahara). French Air Force Rafale aircraft began their missions on March 19, 2011 and soon after were joined by French Navy Rafales flying from the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle while the Air Force operated from Solenzara AB on Corsica. Dassault Rafale M Designed as a result of the ACX (Avion de Combat Experimentale) program prior to Frances withdrawal from the EFA project, the Rafale was first flown on July 4th, 1986. The Rafale is multi-role fighter for the French Air Force and Navy, capable of handling missions from reconnaissance to air supremacy to nuclear deterrence. The Rafale built on Dassault's expertise with delta-winged fighter design, adding a forward canard to improve manoeuvrability and reduce approach speeds for carrier operations. The Rafale's advanced avionics and and limited stealth capabilities are expected to secure it as the primary combat aircraft for the French Air Force and Navy until at least 2040. |
